Good morning folks, we’re glad to be back after a brief hiatus. And what a time to be alive – the sports world is absolutely buzzing.

The NBA and NHL playoffs are in full swing and they even sprinkled in some football for us this past weekend.

That’s right, the 2025 NFL draft has officially come and gone and it has certainly given us lots to talk about.

For this post, I’m going to take a dive into all things Shedeur Sanders. If you have never heard of his name then this post is for you. Expect discussion on all of the following questions: Who is he? Who is his dad? Is he good at football? Where did he play college ball? What happened leading up to the draft? What happened at the combine? What happened during the draft? Why are people now mad at the NFL owners? And more!

So… let’s start with who he is.

Shedeur is a football player (more specifically a Quarterback), and a good one at that. He played his college football at the University of Colorado, which is perhaps one of the many reasons that he did not end up having a very successful draft weekend. Colorado is in the BIG 12, which is not exactly a great football conference, so his regular competition wasn’t exactly top tier. He had a couple of really solid seasons there though, and for many people, he was set to be drafted with one of the top 1-5 picks this year. Spoiler: that did not happen.

Shedeur is the son of all-time great football player Deion Sanders. This plays a huge role in all of the controversy surrounding Shedeur because Deion is very well-known and it has put much more of a spotlight on Shedeur throughout his life and young career. Deion (AKA “Prime”) is a very big personality and certainly not one to shy away from the cameras. Prime is also the head coach at Colorado University, meaning that he was coaching his son for the past few years (which I imagine has also rubbed some people the wrong way and affected Shedeur’s draft stock). Do we trust the talent of someone that is being coached and given all the opportunities from their dad the same as we trust the skill and work ethic of someone who 100% made it based on football alone?

Timeline information:

  • At the end of the college football season in December, Sanders was widely considered a top 5 draft prospect. He and Cam Ward were competing for the #1 pick.
  • Shedeur accepted an invitation to the East-West Shrine Bowl, but he participated in interviews only. He also did not work out at the draft Combine. This isn’t unusual anymore, but it doesn’t help when you’re someone that is kind’ve viewed as a wildcard. Teams want certainty.
  • The Athletic reported that Sanders said the following after some of his interviews with NFL franchises: “I like that I’m able to get in the forefront of everything and they’re able to understand me and ask me whatever questions they want, I’m not ducking. I ain’t hiding. I’m right here, live in the flesh, able to answer whatever questions are out there.” While this may be true in his mind, it was widely documented that his interviews were TERRIBLE. Apparently he came off very cocky and arrogant and it was reported that many owners simply advised their GM’s that they are not to draft Shedeur under any circumstance – to remove him from their board. He had already had previous reports about his inability to respect coaches (not including his father) so any new red flags about his character were not working in his favour.
  • Spring 2025: Sanders worked out for NFL teams at Colorado’s Pro day and The Athletic reported that “he showcased an accurate deep ball but had some wobbly throws on shorter routes. League evaluators described his arm strength as good but not great.”

Draft day: Shedeur was not live in Green Bay at the draft but he was having a live draft party at his house with family and friends. These are always filmed as camera crews need to obtain live footage and reactions of the players and families once they are selected. As time went on during round 1, it got increasingly more awkward as an observer watching Shedeur at his house not getting picked. I will admit, it was good TV though.

He did not get picked in round 1. This came as a huge shock to many and left the media with tons to talk about.

He doubled down on his social medias and insisted that he was okay and fully expected to get picked early the next day during rounds 2 and 3 of the draft. He did not get picked on day 2 either.

It was at this time that it became more interesting to follow this story than the rest of the draft. I will give him credit, Shedeur kept a smile on the entire time, but surely it was a tough experience. Maybe a lesson in humility going forward though?

Sanders would eventually get picked in the 5th round (pick 144) by the Cleveland Browns. This is very interesting because the Browns had selected Dillon Gabriel (another QB) earlier in the draft. Two rookies competing for a spot could be very interesting to follow.

It’s not really a great fit for Shedeur to be honest. The Brown’s offense is terrible with very few weapons, and he’s not known for being a great outdoor QB – he was better off being drafted by a franchise that plays in a dome.

There are many reports coming out now that Sanders will end up being cut by Cleveland after training camp, and that the Toronto Argonauts have first rights to negotiate a contract with him if he wants to play football elsewhere. Talk about a slap in the face… From a top 5 NFL pick to a potential landing in the worst football league of all time: the CFL LOL (I apologize to my fellow Canadians, but c’mon it’s terrible).

All in all, it was a crazy draft weekend. I congratulate all those that were drafted and I apologize that a lot of the spotlight was on a guy that didn’t even get drafted until day 3. That’s just how the media works.

One final note – a lot of people are getting mad at the owners and GM’s in the NFL because it seems like it was widely agreed upon among them that no one was going to take Shedeur early in the draft because of his character issues. People are mad because they are saying that they led him on and they led the world on etc.. but why is it their job to cater to anyone’s feelings? It’s their job to draft who they want when the time comes. I can assure you that owners in the NFL want to win games and championships, and if they thought that Sanders would help them do that, then they would have drafted him. I think they were all just completely off put by his interviews and to be frank, they just didn’t want him or his attitude anywhere near their franchise.

We’ll see what happens!

Cheers,

-E
