This post has been a long time coming. I’ve been busy with march madness, but it’s an important topic for me to discuss, so better late than never right?

This is a 2-part post including details of the signing and then some analysis of this move by Texan’s GM Nick Caserio.

1. Stingly Junior is an outstanding player, and listed below are the full details of his recent singing (which took place a few weeks ago now).

Per Ian Rapoport, “the Texans have agreed to terms with cornerback Derek Stingly Jr. on a three-year, $90 million extension that includes $89 million guaranteed.” This is a record breaking contract for the cornerback position.

If we’re going to start paying wide receivers hundreds of millions, I think it’s only fair that we pay the guys who have to guard them. Right???

2. A look back at the 2022 draft and Nick Caserio’s moves.

I needed to report about this because I think GM’s deserve their flowers when they do something great, and that is absolutely the case here.

Let’s face it, being a GM in pro sports isn’t an easy gig. Yes, they make lots of money and get to watch sports for a living, but they are also criticized for their every move and their work / salary is very public. Not necessarily the work conditions I would want.

It’s such a weird job because there is a happy-medium that you need to find between smart and sexy moves.

GM’s need to make risky moves on occasion otherwise their team will never be good enough to win. You might make the playoffs if you’ve got a solid foundation, but without fully going for it now and again, you will never win a championship. Take the Cowboys, I was watching the NFL Free Agent Tracker last week and it was reported that the Cowboys were the only NFL team not to make a free agent signing of 10+ million since like 1995 (I can’t remember the exact numbers, but I was astounded). Jerry Jones is a terrible GM and it shows because they do not win Super Bowls. It’s literally that simple. They had the chance to sign Derrick Henry this past off season and didn’t because they didn’t think he was worth paying. Can we all agree that they regretted it?

Back to Nick Caserio… Sometimes as a GM, you have to survive long enough in your position for your risky moves to pan out and become good ones. On some occasions, GM’s are fired before the foundation that they created has the chance to blossom. In this case, I’m happy it worked out for Caserio.

If you don’t know what I’m talking about then this next part is for you:

It’s the 2022 NFL draft. The Texans have the 3rd pick. They are going to select a CB and it’s between Derek Stingly Jr. and Sauce Gardner.

Nick Caserio and the Texan’s ended up drafting Stingly and they took some scrutiny for it. Scrutiny that didn’t end there because Gardner had a phenomenal rookie season with the Jets.

However, (and this part is somewhat controversial because there are people out there that would still prefer to have Sauce Gardner on their team) Stingly is much more physically gifted than Sauce, and with more and more flags being thrown by the refs on defensive players like CB’s and safeties in the last couple years, guys like Gardner have struggled a little bit more of late.

Stingly is proving that he can keep up though; he’s a beast and he doesn’t need to be as grabby with his hands.

Whether anyone agrees with me or not… If I were creating a defensive unit from scratch today, I would take Stingly Jr. or Pat Surtain as my CB 1. So Caserio deserves some props for his risky move that he made 3 years ago that has now turned into the largest CB contract in history.
