Just in – The Cleveland Browns sign Myles Garrett to a 4 year extension (6 total years) at $40,000,000 per year. The extension comes with a no-trade clause and $100,000,000 guaranteed cash during the first three years of the contract. It also boasts $88,800,000 in execution guarantees and $122,796,125 in total guarantees.
The Browns were adamant that they were not trading Myles Garrett even though he had requested a trade from the team this offseason. The organization made it very clear, but it seemed near impossible for them to keep him because he was so intent on being moved. In his defense, this was not a diva who was unhappy and demanding to be traded – Myles had given the team his all since 2017 and with the problems they have had at QB and with salary issues (largely due to Watson’s deal), it didn’t seem like they were in much of a position to be a competitive franchise (which is what Garrett was looking for at this stage of his career). I guess it proves that money still trumps all (including winning) as Garrett will be the highest paid non QB ever in the NFL.
I’m not 100% sure where this deal will leave the Brown’s franchise going forward; many still think that the team should have accepted a huge trade (probably including 3-4 first round picks from a team in exchange for Garrett), which would have been a great kickstart to a rebuild. But after they restructured Watson’s contract a few days ago (moving money from salary to bonus), Brown’s ownership has proved that they were ready to spend big to create cap flexibility to resign Garrett.
Now, with Garrett being locked up for 6 years, are the Browns able to compete in a division that features Joe Burrow and Lamar Jackson? Time will tell I guess.
